Andhra Pradesh Floods: 15 Dead, 4.5 Lakh Affected, 1.5 Lakh Hectares of Crops Damaged

*September 2, 2024*Severe flooding across Andhra Pradesh has resulted in 15 confirmed deaths and left approximately 4.5 lakh people affected. Additionally, 1.5 lakh hectares of crops have been severely damaged, adding to the widespread devastation caused by the floods. **Human Losses and Major Incidents**The NTR district has experienced significant loss:- **Vijayawada City**: A landslide in Mogalrajapuram claimed the lives of five individuals as a hillside collapsed.- **Vijayawada Rural**: One person died due to flood-related incidents.- **G Konduru Mandal**: One fatality reported.- **Reddygudem Mandal**: Another death occurred here.Guntur District also faced severe impacts:- **Pedakakani Mandal**: A teacher and two students were washed away by a local stream.- **Mangalagiri Town**: An 80-year-old woman died after boulders fell in the 1st Ward.- **Ponnekallu, Tadikonda Mandal**: One person was washed away in the Kondaveedu stream.In Prakasam District:- **Markapur Division**: Three children drowned while swimming during the floods. **Damage to Infrastructure**The floods have inflicted significant damage on infrastructure:- **Roads**: 1,067.57 kilometers of roads damaged; 13 breaches reported with one restored.- **Culverts**: 79 damaged; 17 restored.- **Scouring**: 46 scourings reported; four filled.- **Trees**: 20 fallen; all cleared.- **Traffic**: 110 interruptions reported; 43 restored.**Agricultural Losses**The agricultural sector has been heavily impacted:- **Horticulture**: 13,920 hectares damaged. Significant damage in NTR (4,994 hectares), Guntur (3,314 hectares), Bapatla (3,946 hectares), Krishna (1,347 hectares), and Palnadu (317 hectares) districts. **Rescue and Relief Operations**Ongoing rescue and relief efforts are substantial:- **Helicopter Operations**: The Navy has deployed two helicopters, with six more requested. Ten NDRF teams and 40 motorized boats are also in operation.- **Relief Camps**: 166 camps have been set up, sheltering 31,238 people. Additionally, 166 medical camps are addressing health concerns in flood-affected areas.As the situation evolves, authorities continue to mobilize resources and coordinate relief efforts to support the affected communities.
