Gujarat Faces Devastating Floods: 29 Dead, Thousands Displaced

Ahmedabad: Gujarat is grappling with severe flooding due to relentless heavy rains, which have led to at least 29 confirmed deaths. The state has been hit hard, with significant flooding reported across numerous areas.Authorities have evacuated approximately 40,000 people from the affected regions, and rescue operations are underway. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have successfully rescued around 300 individuals from the floodwaters.The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for 22 districts, including Kutch, Saurashtra, Dwarka, Jamnagar, Morbi, Surendranagar, Junagadh, Rajkot, Botad, Gir Somnath, Amreli, and Bhavnagar. Additionally, a yellow alert has been announced for North Gujarat, Central Gujarat, and South Gujarat. Heavy rains are expected to continue today (Thursday), exacerbating the situation.The excessive rainfall has caused river and dam water levels to rise significantly, prompting the release of water from Ajwa and Pratapura reservoirs into the Vishwamitra River. This has led to inundation in low-lying areas, with water levels reaching up to 10 to 12 feet in some villages and cities, including Vadodara.Relief efforts are ongoing, with approximately 6,000 people evacuated to safety on Wednesday alone. The total rainfall in Gujarat has reached 105 percent of the average annual rainfall, according to meteorological officials.In response to the crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, offering full support and assistance to the state as it deals with the devastating impact of the floods.
