Prakasam Barrage Gate Damaged Amid Record Flooding, Second Highest Flood Discharge in 121 Years

**Vijayawada, 2nd September 2024:** A balancing weight of a gate pillar at the Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada was damaged early Monday morning, triggering a major emergency response. The incident occurred as floodwaters carried boats downstream, with four boats becoming stuck at the barrage gates, further escalating the already critical situation.In response to the damage and the overwhelming flow of water, the Water Resources Department lifted all 70 crest gates of the barrage to manage the massive inflow. As of 7:00 AM, Prakasam Barrage recorded a surplus of 11,33,076 cusecs of water, marking the second highest flood discharge in 121 years. This unprecedented level of water flow is the highest recorded since the barrage replaced the older anicut.The colossal discharge has led to widespread flooding in the region. Popular tourist spots like Bhavani Island and Berm Park are now submerged, and several upstream areas of Prakasam Barrage are heavily affected. In Vijayawada, residents of Ramalingeswaranagar and Yanamalakuduru are facing severe challenges, with floodwaters entering their homes despite the presence of a retaining wall designed to protect the area.Officials have issued the second flood warning, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation to implement further measures to mitigate the damage. Emergency services are on high alert, ready to assist with any necessary evacuations and support for affected residents.
