*Hyderabad:* The Telangana State Medical Council (TGSMC) has intensified its efforts against unlicensed medical practitioners by filing 300 FIRs against 70,000 quacks operating across the state since February 2024. This crackdown aims to address the widespread issue of quackery, where practitioners operate without proper medical qualifications.Dr. Srinivas Gundagani, Vice Chairman of the TGSMC, highlighted the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that only those with an MBBS degree registered with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or the local medical council are legally permitted to practice modern allopathic medicine. “Quackery is a major issue across India, with more than 70,000 unqualified practitioners in Telangana alone,” he stated.Quackery presents serious risks, including contributing to global antibiotic resistance. Many quacks misuse antibiotics and steroids, leading to dangerous consequences. Notable incidents include a botched circumcision in Khammam that resulted in severe injury, and a fatal case in Warangal where a patient died after receiving seven injections in an hour.In response, the TGSMC has established anti-quackery committees across Telangana. These committees, comprised of TGSMC members, Healthcare Reform Doctors Association (HRDA) representatives, and Indian Medical Association (IMA) members, conduct raids and collect data on rural practitioners.Dr. Gundagani also called for the government to focus on deploying qualified doctors to primary health centers, addressing a significant shortage in these facilities. NMC data reveals a 46 percent deficiency in community health centers and a 26 percent deficiency in primary health centers in Telangana.
