Mohan Bhagwat Calls for Unity Despite Differences, Says Ahimsa Can Guide Hindu Society
New York: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has called for unity amid social and cultural differences.
Speaking at the Universal Oneness Celebration in New York, Bhagwat stressed the importance of coexistence, non-violence and the oneness of existence.
He said differences should not become a reason for separation.
Instead, society should learn to remain united while respecting diversity.
“Despite differences we resolve to stay together,” Bhagwat said.
He also linked the Hindu idea of the oneness of existence with Ahimsa, or non-violence.
According to Bhagwat, this approach means avoiding destruction and allowing life to flourish.
He said this should be among the values that Hindu society presents to the wider world.
Bhagwat Highlights Oneness of Existence
Bhagwat’s remarks were part of a broader message on unity and diversity.
He argued that people may differ in appearance, language, religion and ways of life.
Yet, he said, an underlying sense of oneness connects everyone.
Bhagwat described this idea as central to the civilisational thought of Bharat.
He also connected the principle with the Sanskrit ideal of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, meaning “the world is one family.”
The RSS chief said diversity should not be erased.
Rather, it should be respected and celebrated while maintaining a sense of common belonging.
Ahimsa and the Message to the World
A key part of Bhagwat’s message was his reference to Ahimsa.

Bhagwat also addressed Indians living in the United States.
He urged members of the diaspora to remain loyal to their Karmabhoomi, or the country where they live and work.
He said their responsibilities toward their country of residence should come first.
At the same time, he described Bharat as their Janmabhoomi, or land of birth.
The RSS chief said members of the diaspora could contribute to India while continuing to fulfil their duties abroad.
Universal Oneness Celebration in New York
The speech was delivered at the Universal Oneness Celebration at Madison Square Garden.
The event was organised by the American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD) Forum.
Organisers presented the gathering as a celebration of unity, dialogue and shared heritage.
More than 250 Hindu-American organisations were associated with the event, according to the organisers.
Reports from the organisers said thousands of people from across the United States attended the programme.
The gathering was held during the RSS’s centenary year and included cultural, spiritual and interfaith elements.
A Message Focused on Coexistence
Bhagwat’s New York address centred on a simple theme: differences need not prevent people from living together.
His remarks placed unity and diversity alongside one another.
For him, diversity adds richness to collective life rather than weakening it.
The reference to Ahimsa added another dimension to the message.
