Telangana: Farmers’ Commission Urges CM Revanth Reddy to Revive Minor Irrigation System
Hyderabad: The Telangana Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Commission has recommended a major revamp of the state’s minor irrigation system to improve water availability for farmers.
A delegation led by Commission Chairman M. Kodanda Reddy met Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy at his Jubilee Hills residence. The team submitted a detailed report on minor irrigation and tank management.
The report calls for the revival of minor irrigation systems with modern technical units. The aim is to improve water-use efficiency and strengthen agricultural stability.
The commission also proposed a command area-based management system. It would bring small and major irrigation resources under a coordinated framework.
Telangana Minor Irrigation Act Proposed
One of the key recommendations is a dedicated Minor Irrigation Act for protecting tanks and other water resources.
The commission urged the government to immediately identify the Full Tank Level (FTL) boundaries of tanks across Telangana. It also called for the removal of encroachments.
The report stressed that tank protection should receive long-term attention. Restoring these water bodies can improve water security and support farming communities.
Recent discussions on minor irrigation have also focused on tank desiltation, bund strengthening and sluice repairs. The state irrigation department has already pushed for faster restoration of minor irrigation tanks.
CM Revanth Reddy Seeks Focus on Crop Diversification
During the meeting, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy discussed the commission’s recommendations with its members.
He asked the commission to focus on crop diversification, horticulture and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs).
The Telangana government has also been examining crop diversification as part of broader agricultural reforms. Earlier, the commission submitted recommendations to the Chief Minister on increasing crop variety in the state.
Tank Restoration Seen as Key to Rural Agriculture
The commission said restoring Telangana’s tanks is important for water security, farm stability and rural livelihoods.
Tank irrigation has historically played an important role in Telangana agriculture. Programmes such as Mission Kakatiya were aimed at restoring thousands of minor irrigation tanks and improving their water storage capacity.
The commission’s recommendations come amid renewed government attention to the condition of minor irrigation tanks. In May, Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy directed officials to begin desiltation works across the state. He also stressed tank stabilisation and repairs to improve water-holding capacity.
Commission Explains Two Years of Work
The delegation also briefed the Chief Minister about the programmes undertaken by the Telangana Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Commission during the past two years.
Members explained the recommendations submitted to the government on various agriculture and farmer-related issues.
The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction with the commission’s performance and its work.
The commission is headed by M. Kodanda Reddy, according to the official Telangana Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Commission website.
