Telangana Plans World-Class Golf Courses at Jawahar Nagar and Somasila to Boost Golf Tourism: Jupally
Hyderabad: Telangana is planning to expand its golf infrastructure with two world-class courses as part of efforts to promote golf tourism across the State.
Tourism, Culture and Archaeology Minister Jupally Krishna Rao said the government wants to position Telangana as a major global destination for golf tourism.
One of the proposed projects is a 130-acre golf course at Jawahar Nagar near Shamirpet. The State is also working on plans for another international-standard golf course at Somasila along the Krishna River.
The projects are expected to attract professional and amateur golfers from India and abroad. They are also aimed at linking sporting infrastructure with Telangana’s wider tourism potential.
Somasila golf course to blend sport, nature and tourism
The proposed Somasila golf course could offer a distinctive setting for golf tourism.
The project is planned along the Krishna River, close to the Nallamala forests and the Amrabad Tiger Reserve.
The natural surroundings could help Telangana create a golf destination that combines sport, wildlife, nature and leisure tourism.
The government is considering private participation through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for the proposed golf tourism infrastructure.
Jupally said golf should not remain confined to Hyderabad. He stressed the need to take the sport to other parts of Telangana and use it to attract international visitors.
Telangana Golconda Masters to showcase Hyderabad
The Minister was speaking at a press conference linked to the 12th Telangana Golconda Masters at the Hyderabad Golf Association.
The tournament will be held from September 1 to 4, 2026, at the Hyderabad Golf Association.
The event is being organised by the DP World Professional Golf Tour of India (DP World PGTI) in association with the Hyderabad Golf Association. Telangana Tourism is supporting the tournament as an Event Partner.
The championship will feature 132 golfers and carries a total prize purse of ₹1 crore.
The field includes leading Indian professionals and golfers from several countries.
Golf and Telangana heritage to share the spotlight
Jupally said the Telangana Golconda Masters offers more than a sporting platform.
According to the Minister, the event can connect international golf with Telangana’s history and tourism attractions.
He highlighted the State’s lakes, forests, rivers, palaces and forts as key tourism assets.
The iconic Golconda Fort also provides a distinctive heritage backdrop to the tournament.
The Hyderabad Golf Association similarly brings together golf and the historical character of the city.
The participation of international golfers is expected to give Telangana additional global exposure.
Kapil Dev to support Telangana tourism and sports promotion
Jupally also said the Telangana government was interested in using the experience and services of former India cricket captain Kapil Dev to promote tourism and sports.
The Minister said Kapil Dev’s association could help showcase Telangana’s tourism and sporting potential to wider audiences.
Kapil Dev, who is President of DP World PGTI, appreciated Telangana Tourism’s continued support for the Golconda Masters.
He said the tournament could help promote Hyderabad and Telangana as emerging destinations for golf tourism.
132 golfers to compete for ₹1 crore prize money
The 12th Telangana Golconda Masters will bring together a strong Indian and international field.
DP World PGTI Order of Merit leader Saptak Talwar is among the leading Indian professionals in the tournament.
Other prominent Indian players include Honey Baisoya, Veer Ahlawat, Rashid Khan, Akshay Sharma and Om Prakash Chouhan.
The international field includes defending champion Jamal Hossain of Bangladesh.
Golfers from Bangladesh, the Czech Republic, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Uganda and Japan are also set to compete.
Hyderabad-based professionals Mohd Azhar, Vishesh Sharma and Rupinder Singh Gill will lead the local challenge.
Tournament carries important ranking points
The Telangana Golconda Masters is part of the Race to DP World India Championship.
The competition will play a role in determining the DP World PGTI No. 1 player.
It will also influence qualification for the season-ending DP World India Championship.
The top 24 players from the relevant DP World PGTI standings will earn places in the season-ending championship.
The tournament has been supported by the Telangana government since its inception in 2015.
HGA Captain Jasvinder Singh Birgi said hosting the event gives members an opportunity to watch top-level professional golf.
He also highlighted the global exposure for the Hyderabad Golf Association course through the tournament’s live coverage.
The participating players will compete for the Golconda Fort Trophy, which was introduced by the HGA during the inaugural edition.
Telangana eyes bigger role in golf tourism
The new golf course proposals signal Telangana’s broader push to connect sports with tourism.
The Jawahar Nagar project could strengthen golf infrastructure around Hyderabad.
