Supreme Court Stays FIR Against ‘Mohammad’ Deepak Kumar in Uttarakhand Case
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has stayed the criminal proceedings arising from an FIR against Uttarakhand gym owner Deepak Kumar.
Kumar had gained attention after introducing himself as “Mohammad Deepak” during a confrontation involving a Muslim shopkeeper in Kotdwar.
The case dates back to January 26, 2026. Members of Bajrang Dal and other Hindutva groups had allegedly confronted elderly shopkeeper Wakeel Ahmed.
The dispute reportedly centred on the name of Ahmed’s clothing shop. The group objected to the use of the word “Baba” in the shop’s name.
Deepak Kumar intervened during the confrontation. He questioned why the shopkeeper should be forced to change the name.
When asked about his identity, Kumar reportedly said, “My name is Mohammad Deepak.”
The remark later went viral on social media. Kumar said his intention was to convey a message of equality and humanity.
FIR Registered Against Deepak Kumar
An FIR was registered against Kumar and another person, Vijay Rawat, following a complaint by members of the Hindutva groups.
The complaint alleged rioting, causing hurt and intentional insult. The accused persons have denied wrongdoing.
Kumar also approached the police over the incident. Multiple complaints and FIRs were subsequently linked to the confrontation.
The Uttarakhand High Court had earlier refused to quash the FIR against Kumar. The court also directed him not to comment about the case on social media while the investigation continued.
Supreme Court Grants Relief
The Supreme Court has now stayed the proceedings arising from the FIR against Kumar.
The bench also stayed the Uttarakhand High Court’s direction restricting his social media comments about the case.
The Supreme Court issued notice on Kumar’s plea challenging the High Court’s refusal to quash the FIR.
The development comes months after the January incident attracted widespread attention across India.
Kumar’s intervention drew support from several quarters. The incident also sparked a wider discussion about communal harmony and religious identity.
For now, the Supreme Court’s stay provides interim relief to Deepak Kumar. The legal proceedings will remain subject to further orders from the apex court.
