*Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka – September 2024:* A woman was arrested on Tuesday after allegedly assaulting a doctor on duty at the district hospital in Chikkamagaluru. The incident led to protests by hospital staff, resulting in the temporary closure of the outpatient dispensary.The accused, identified as Taslima, a resident of Chikkamagaluru town, reportedly attacked Dr. B.S. Venkatesh, an orthopaedic specialist, during a confrontation in the hospital’s emergency ward. Dr. Venkatesh was attending to a patient, Irfan, a relative of Taslima, who had been injured in a scuffle. The altercation took place at around 10:45 a.m. when the doctor requested the patient’s relatives to leave the emergency room to allow for uninterrupted treatment.Taslima allegedly became agitated, entered into a heated argument with Dr. Venkatesh, and hit him with her slipper. Hospital staff quickly intervened to defuse the situation. Following the attack, doctors and other hospital employees staged a protest in solidarity with Dr. Venkatesh, shutting down the outpatient services for several hours.Dr. Venkatesh filed a formal complaint with the Chikkamagaluru Police, accusing Taslima, Irfan, and another woman of provoking and assaulting him without cause. The police responded promptly, arresting both Taslima and Irfan. They were later remanded to judicial custody, according to G. Krishnamurthy, Additional Superintendent of Police for Chikkamagaluru.The incident has raised concerns about the safety of healthcare professionals and the need for stricter measures to protect doctors from such assaults while on duty.
