In response to the Supreme Court’s recent verdict on the classification of sub-castes within SC and ST reservations, various communities and organizations have called for a Bharat Bandh today. The decision, issued by a broad constitutional bench on August 1, supports dividing SCs and STs into sub-castes and prioritizing reservation for those deemed to be in greater need.Opponents of the ruling argue that it undermines the principles of existing reservations and may lead to inequities. As a result, protests have been planned across the country to challenge the Supreme Court’s decision and advocate for its reversal.Authorities have been advised to remain vigilant, particularly in areas prone to unrest. High-alert measures are in place, especially in western Uttar Pradesh, where officials anticipate potential violent incidents. Educational institutions, business complexes, and private companies are expected to close in observance of the bandh.The call for the bandh has received support from various political and social groups, including the Dalit Mahasabha, which has urged cooperation from public and private sectors, as well as educational institutions and transport services.Security forces, including senior police officers, have been mobilized to ensure public safety and prevent disruptions during the protests.
