Delhi’s Smog Tower at Connaught Place Remains Non-Operational Amid Rising Pollution Levels

As air quality in Delhi worsens, with the latest data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) placing it in the ‘very poor’ category, the much-touted ‘Smog Tower’ at Connaught Place remains locked and non-operational. The tower, designed to reduce pollution levels, has not been in use this year, leaving local residents concerned as the capital faces another season of hazardous air.Residents have expressed disappointment, pointing out that the smog tower, which was operational last year, helped to significantly improve air quality. Sanjay Ahuja, a local auto driver, shared his concern: “The smog tower hasn’t operated this year. When it was running last year, the air remained clean. It should be made operational again, especially now, as pollution levels are rising and it’s becoming difficult to breathe.”Sangeeta Devi, another local resident, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of the tower during the winter months when pollution levels peak. “This tower hasn’t been operated this year, but last year, when it was working, the air was cleaner. Winter is approaching, and it’s time to switch it on. There is too much pollution in the air.”Kiran Tiwari, a tea shop owner who lives nearby, also noted the absence of the smog tower’s operation this year. “It was running last year, but not this time. We are facing increasing pollution, and we need it to work again,” she said. With pollution levels rising ahead of winter, residents are urging authorities to make the smog tower functional again to provide some relief from the capital’s deteriorating air quality.
