Heavy Rains in Hyderabad Lead to Tragic Incident and Rising Reservoir Levels

*Hyderabad, September 1, 2024* — Heavy overnight rains across Telangana, including Hyderabad, have resulted in severe waterlogging and a tragic incident in Maripeda mandal of Mahabubabad district. Reports indicate that a man and his daughter are feared to have been swept away by flash floods. The pair, Nunawat Motilal and his daughter Nunawat Ashwini, were en route from Khammam to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport when their car was overtaken by rising waters at Purushothamaiahgudem. In their last communication, they reported that the water level inside the vehicle had risen to their necks before their phones went silent. Despite ongoing rescue efforts, the car has yet to be found.The relentless rainfall has significantly impacted the city’s reservoirs. Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar are both experiencing substantial inflows, while the Musi River has risen to near the Moosarambagh bridge. Hussain Sagar’s water levels have surpassed the Full Tank Level (FTL) but remain below the Maximum Water Level (MWL). Authorities have issued a warning to residents to stay alert and avoid non-essential travel. IndiGo Airlines has cautioned passengers about potential flight delays due to waterlogged roads and advised checking flight statuses before heading to the airport. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts more rain in the coming days, and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has urged the public to exercise caution during this period. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and travel advisories as the situation develops.
