ISRO Launches EOS-05: India’s First Imaging Satellite for Geosynchronous Orbit
Sriharikota: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a major milestone in Earth observation on Friday with the successful launch of EOS-05.
The advanced Earth observation satellite was carried aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
The launch took place at 2:55 am IST from the Second Launch Pad. The 51.7-metre-tall GSLV-F17 completed its mission successfully.
EOS-05 Successfully Reaches Intended Orbit
After around 19 minutes of flight, the rocket placed EOS-05 into its intended Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO).
ISRO describes EOS-05 as a state-of-the-art Earth observation spacecraft. It is India’s first imaging satellite designed to operate from a geosynchronous orbit.
The satellite weighs around 2,367 kg, making it a significant payload for the GSLV. The mission also marked the 19th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle.
Why EOS-05 Is Important
EOS-05 is designed to provide frequent imaging of large areas of the Earth.
Its eventual geosynchronous orbit will allow the satellite to remain synchronised with Earth’s rotation. This can enable repeated observation of the same broad region.
The capability could strengthen India’s monitoring systems across several sectors. These include agriculture, disaster management and environmental observation.
The satellite can also support applications such as flood monitoring, cyclone tracking and forest-fire observation.
A New Capability for India
Most Earth observation satellites operate in lower orbits. Such satellites move quickly over the Earth’s surface and revisit a particular location periodically.
EOS-05 is designed for a different role.
From nearly 36,000 km above Earth, a geosynchronous imaging satellite can repeatedly observe a large fixed region. This offers an important advantage for situations requiring more frequent monitoring.
The satellite will undergo further orbital manoeuvres before reaching its intended operational orbit.
GSLV-F17 Mission Marks ISRO Milestone
The successful mission adds another important achievement to India’s growing space programme.
ISRO’s GSLV-F17 placed EOS-05 into the planned transfer orbit as intended. The agency described the spacecraft as healthy following the successful mission.
The launch also highlights India’s expanding capability in advanced Earth observation technology.
EOS-05 is expected to become a valuable space-based asset for monitoring India’s land, environment and changing weather-related conditions.
