Nationwide Medical Strike Launched in Protest of Doctor’s Murder

*August 17, 2024*In response to the rape and murder of a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor in Kolkata, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has initiated a nationwide strike starting today. This strike, the largest in a decade, has led to a halt in many medical services across the country.The tragic incident occurred on August 9 at RG Care Medical College Hospital in Kolkata, sparking widespread outrage and protests. The IMA has called for a 24-hour strike from 6 a.m. on August 17 to 6 a.m. on August 18, with support from medical professionals nationwide.During the strike, general outpatient departments (OPDs) and elective surgeries will be suspended. However, emergency services and casualty care will remain operational to address urgent medical needs. The strike will impact both government and private hospitals where modern medicine doctors are employed, reflecting a unified demand for justice and improved safety measures for healthcare workers.
