*New Delhi, September 17, 2024*: Amid increasing demands from the opposition for a caste-based census, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritizing development over caste divisions. In a strong response, Sitharaman stated, “We give priority to development over caste,” highlighting the government’s focus on inclusivity through developmental policies.Referring to the interim budget, she pointed out that the government’s primary focus remains on addressing the needs of four key groups— the poor, women, youth, and farmers. “Our agenda is to uplift these groups and ensure economic growth for all, rather than fueling caste-based distinctions,” she added.Sitharaman also addressed the financial challenges states are facing, noting that some states are struggling to resist short-term temptations, which has led to difficulties in clearing their bills. Her remarks come as debates over a caste-based census continue to heat up, with the government advocating for policies that promote development as the primary tool for social and economic upliftment.
