PM Modi Urges Indians to Avoid Unnecessary Foreign Trips, Weddings Abroad

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has renewed his call for Indians to embrace the ‘Vocal for Local’ and Swadeshi approach.

In a message shared on Instagram, Modi urged citizens to reduce unnecessary spending abroad. He specifically mentioned foreign holidays and weddings held overseas.

The Prime Minister said people should instead support domestic tourism and Indian wedding destinations.

His remarks came while celebrating India’s latest economic growth figures. India recorded 7.8% real GDP growth in the first quarter of 2026-27.

Modi described the growth as a reflection of India’s collective strength. He also credited the determination and hard work of citizens.

PM Modi promotes ‘Wedding in India’ push

Modi said Indians should reconsider holding wedding celebrations abroad. He encouraged families to follow the idea of ‘Weddings in India’.

According to the Prime Minister, spending on weddings within India can help keep money in the domestic economy. It can also support local businesses and create employment.

The wedding sector involves a wide range of businesses. These include hotels, caterers, decorators, travel companies and event professionals.

Modi has made a similar appeal in the past. In his 2023 Mann Ki Baat address, he urged families to hold weddings in India rather than overseas.

Focus on Swadeshi and local businesses

The Prime Minister also called for greater support for Indian products and services.

He linked the ‘Vocal for Local’ message with the broader goal of building a self-reliant India.

Modi said stronger domestic consumption can help Indian businesses grow. It can also create more opportunities for workers and entrepreneurs.

He further appealed to citizens to avoid buying gold unless it is genuinely necessary.

India’s 7.8% GDP growth

The Prime Minister’s message followed the release of India’s latest GDP figures.

Real GDP grew by 7.8% in Q1 of financial year 2026-27, covering April to June 2026. The figure was higher than the earlier 7% growth estimate cited for the quarter.

Modi said India achieved this growth despite global conflicts, economic uncertainty and disrupted supply chains.

He also stressed the importance of maintaining the growth momentum. According to him, self-reliance will remain important for India’s long-term development.

Modi’s message to citizens

The Prime Minister said India’s progress would depend on the collective efforts of its citizens.

He urged people to celebrate the country’s economic performance while remaining focused on the future.

His latest appeal puts domestic tourism, Indian weddings and local products at the centre of the Swadeshi push.

The message also aligns with his broader vision of building a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by the centenary of India’s Independence in 2047.
