Rayalaseema Irrigation: Proddatur MLA Varadarajula Reddy Warns KC Canal Farmers Not to Expect Water
Proddatur, Andhra Pradesh: Proddatur MLA Varadarajula Reddy has claimed that farmers in Rayalaseema should not expect irrigation water through the KC Canal this season.
According to the MLA, the Andhra Pradesh government has no plan to release irrigation water to the KC Canal. He said the situation is unlikely to change in the future unless water availability improves.
Reddy said he had spoken with officials and ministers about the issue. According to him, they clearly indicated that irrigation water would not be released to the KC Canal.
Srisailam water may not reach Rayalaseema
The MLA also cautioned farmers against assuming that water stored at the Srisailam reservoir would automatically reach Rayalaseema.
He claimed that the available water is being prioritised for power generation by Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. He further alleged that surplus water from Srisailam is being released towards Nagarjuna Sagar and Pulichintala.
Because of this, farmers should not rely only on the presence of water at Srisailam, Reddy said.
Warning to KC Canal farmers
The Proddatur MLA specifically urged KC Canal farmers to reconsider planting paddy.
He advised farmers to avoid water-intensive crops during the current situation. He also suggested that dryland crops should be considered only if sufficient rainfall is received.
“Farmers should not expect water simply because there is water in Srisailam,” was the key message attributed to the MLA.
Rayalaseema farmers face uncertainty
The comments come amid continuing concerns over irrigation water availability in Rayalaseema. Recent reports have highlighted water-related difficulties affecting farmers and standing crops in parts of the region.
The KC Canal is an important irrigation network for agricultural areas in the former Kurnool and Kadapa regions. Water availability has a direct bearing on crop planning for thousands of farming families.
Earlier reports have also recorded government discussions on crop choices and irrigation availability under the KC Canal and other projects. In one such report, officials advised farmers to prioritise dry crops instead of paddy amid water constraints.
For now, the MLA’s remarks have added to uncertainty among farmers planning their next crop. Any final decision on water releases will depend on official irrigation orders and reservoir conditions.
