Saharanpur Collectorate Mosque Demolished at 5 AM; Dispute Over Its History and Land Records

Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh: A mosque located inside the Saharanpur Collectorate complex was demolished early Saturday morning, September 5, amid an ongoing dispute over its legality and history.

Reports said the structure was brought down at around 5 am. The development follows a July order by the City Magistrate’s court directing the removal of the mosque from government land.

The dispute centres on the land where the mosque stood. According to the court order reported in July, the property falls under Khasra No. 539 and covers about 315 square metres.

The administration maintained that the land was recorded as government property. The court subsequently treated the occupation as unauthorised and ordered the structure to be removed within 30 days.

Dispute Over the Mosque’s History

The mosque committee reportedly contested the administration’s position. It claimed that the religious structure existed before the Collectorate and relied on historical documents during the proceedings.

One disputed piece of evidence was reportedly an electricity bill dated January 1, 1911. The committee cited it to support its claim about the mosque’s earlier existence.

The administration, however, questioned the authenticity or significance of the document. It reportedly argued that electricity reached Saharanpur only in 1912, creating a dispute over the historical record.

July Court Order Preceded Demolition

The demolition follows a decision reported on July 17 by the court of Saharanpur City Magistrate Kuldeep Singh.

The court ordered the occupants to remove the alleged unauthorised occupation within 30 days. It also directed recovery of more than Rs 6.41 crore in connection with the use of the government property.

The case had reportedly originated from a complaint filed in 2025. The complaint alleged that the Collectorate premises were being used beyond religious purposes, including commercial activities.

The administration presented revenue records and other documents during the proceedings. The court relied on the available records while passing its order.

Security Arrangements in Saharanpur

The demolition of the structure is a sensitive development because of the location and the religious nature of the dispute.
