In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court has affirmed that women have absolute rights over assets provided to them during marriage, often referred to as ‘woman’s money’. The Court emphasized that such assets, including cash and property given as gifts by parents and relatives, belong solely to the woman and cannot be claimed back by her husband or father. The ruling came in response to a case brought by Padala Veerabhadra Rao from Telangana, who had accused her former in-laws of breaching trust by not returning money given to her divorced daughter during her marriage. The Supreme Court dismissed Rao’s case, underscoring that once these assets are given, they are legally and unequivocally the woman’s property. This decision reinforces the principle that gifts and financial contributions made during marriage are considered the woman’s personal wealth, setting a significant precedent in the realm of marital property rights.
