Telangana BJP Chief N Ramchander Rao Arrested Near Secretariat Over ₹15,000 Crore Fee Dues

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao and several senior party leaders were arrested near the State Secretariat on Thursday during a protest over pending student fee reimbursement dues.

The BJP leaders were attempting to submit representations signed by more than 8 lakh students. They demanded the immediate release of around ₹15,000 crore in pending fee reimbursement dues.

Police stopped the leaders at the Secretariat gates. The BJP delegation then staged a protest outside the premises.

Rao was subsequently taken to Chikkadpally Police Station. Other BJP leaders were shifted to different police stations.

Those detained included BJP state general secretary Goutham Rao, BJP Legislature Party leader Alleti Maheshwar Reddy, MLC Malka Komaraiah, former MP D K Aruna, and state secretary Bhandaru Vijaya Laxmi.

BJP Seeks Release of Pending Student Fee Reimbursement

The protest is part of the Telangana BJP’s ongoing campaign over fee reimbursement arrears.

The party has repeatedly accused the Congress-led Telangana government of failing to clear the pending payments.

Rao had earlier sought an appointment with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to submit the student representations. According to reports, the BJP said it received no response to the request.

The BJP says the issue is affecting students across Telangana. Rao has previously claimed that nearly 40 lakh students are impacted by the pending dues.

Ramchander Rao Criticises Congress Government

Following the arrests, Rao accused the Congress government of ignoring students’ concerns.

He said the BJP would not stop its campaign over the issue.

The Telangana BJP chief has demanded that the government clear the pending fee reimbursement amount without further delay.

The party had already intensified its campaign last month. Rao staged a 48-hour hunger strike in August over the same issue and warned of further agitation if the dues were not released.

Government’s Response

The fee reimbursement issue has also triggered a political dispute between the BJP and the Telangana government.

Government Whip Aadi Srinivas previously accused the BJP of politicising the matter. He said the previous BRS government had left substantial arrears and claimed the Congress government had a plan to address the issue.

The government has also discussed changes to the payment system, including direct transfers to students from the current academic year, according to earlier statements reported by The New Indian Express.

BJP Promises to Continue Agitation

Thursday’s arrests mark another escalation in the BJP’s campaign over fee reimbursement.

Rao maintained that police action would not stop the movement.

The party has said it will continue pressing the Telangana government until the pending student fee reimbursement dues are cleared.
