Young Man Allegedly Smuggles Ganja to Buy iPhone for Girlfriend in Telangana
Khammam: A 21-year-old man was allegedly involved in ganja smuggling in an attempt to buy an iPhone as a birthday gift for his girlfriend, police said.
The incident came to light during a vehicle inspection near Vaira Cross Road in Khammam district.
According to police, the accused were identified as Mithra Chaitanya, 21, from Peddapalli, and Hemalatha, 20.
The two were allegedly travelling together on a motorcycle while carrying ganja.
Police said the duo had purchased around 12 kilograms of ganja in Pasupulanka, Odisha, for ₹16,000.
They allegedly planned to transport it to Hyderabad and sell it for around ₹6 lakh.
The accused reportedly attempted to escape after noticing police conducting checks near Vaira Cross Road.
Police intercepted the motorcycle and took both suspects into custody.
During the operation, officers allegedly seized the ganja, a two-wheeler and four mobile phones.
During questioning, Chaitanya reportedly told police that he wanted to buy an iPhone for Hemalatha’s birthday.
Police suspect that the pair were involved in transporting the contraband as part of the alleged plan to raise money for the purchase.
Investigators have also identified other people allegedly linked to the case.
Police said Bhagwan Hantal, who allegedly supplied the ganja to the accused, is currently absconding.
Two alleged buyers in Hyderabad, identified as Shashi and Nagula, are also reportedly on the run.
Police have launched efforts to trace the absconding suspects and investigate the alleged supply network.
Further investigation is underway to establish the full chain involved in the transportation and sale of the contraband.
