During the visit, officials briefed the Chief Minister on the plant’s functioning, explaining how wet waste is processed using microorganisms in an oxygen-free environment to generate biogas rich in methane. The facility, commissioned in 2022, is currently managed by Srinivas Waste Management Solutions and generates an annual revenue of around ₹1.2 crore
Following the inspection, CM Joseph Vijay approved the preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs) for new biogas plants in Vellore, Erode, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Nagercoil, while instructing officials to establish similar projects across all 25 municipal corporations in Tamil Nadu
Officials also informed the Chief Minister that three additional 100-TPD biogas plants are currently under construction in Sholinganallur and Koyambedu, with more facilities planned in Madhavaram and Sholinganallur. Once completed, Chennai’s total biogas processing capacity is expected to increase to 800 tonnes per day.
