Telangana Plans FASTag-Based Traffic Challan Recovery in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: Traffic violators in Telangana may soon have their pending challans recovered directly through their FASTag accounts.
The Telangana government is examining a technology-driven system to improve traffic fine collection. Under the proposal, unpaid traffic challans could eventually be deducted from a vehicle owner’s FASTag account.
The idea was discussed by Cyberabad Traffic Joint Commissioner of Police Sunpreet Singh. He said authorities are exploring the proposal in coordination with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA).
How the proposed FASTag challan system may work
Under the proposed mechanism, a traffic violation would first generate an e-challan as usual. The vehicle owner would then get an opportunity to pay the fine within the prescribed period.
If the challan remains unpaid, authorities could use the FASTag-linked system for recovery. The exact process, timeline and safeguards are yet to be finalised.
The proposal is aimed at improving compliance and reducing the number of pending traffic fines. Officials believe technology can make enforcement more effective.
At present, Telangana Police operates an integrated e-Challan system. Vehicle owners can check pending challans and make payments through the official portal.
FASTag technology could play a bigger role
FASTag is already widely used for electronic toll collection. According to a Rajya Sabha statement, around 6.05 crore FASTags were active across India as of February 2026.
The government also said FASTag transaction data is integrated with VAHAN. Such data can support electronic enforcement and road-safety measures under the Motor Vehicles Act.
This existing digital infrastructure could help authorities explore new enforcement mechanisms.
Hyderabad’s Outer Ring Road in focus
The proposal comes as authorities look at greater use of technology across Hyderabad’s transport network.
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority manages the Outer Ring Road system. Its official website provides information on ORR toll rates, monthly passes and daily passes.
Authorities are also examining ways to improve traffic discipline and make road enforcement more efficient.
Not implemented yet
Importantly, the FASTag-based challan recovery system is only a proposal at this stage. It has not been announced as a fully operational system.
Further discussions are expected before any final decision. Issues such as legal authority, prior notice, dispute resolution and protection against wrongful deductions would also need to be addressed.
The development follows Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s earlier push for technology-based recovery of traffic fines. In January, he suggested linking vehicle owners’ bank accounts with the traffic department for direct recovery of pending fines.
If implemented, the FASTag proposal could significantly change how traffic challans are collected in Hyderabad.
