Nepal Flood News: A massive flash flood struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district on Wednesday, August 26, sending the Bhote Koshi River into a dangerous surge and triggering widespread destruction near the Tibet border.
Dramatic videos from the affected region show powerful floodwaters sweeping through roads, settlements and infrastructure. The sudden rise in water has raised serious concerns for communities living along the river.
The worst-affected areas include Timure and Syabrubesi in Rasuwa. Local reports indicate that markets, houses, bridges and other infrastructure have suffered major damage. Several hydropower facilities have also been affected.
People Missing as Rescue Operations Begin
The situation remains fluid, with authorities still assessing the full extent of the destruction. At least eight bodies have been recovered, while several people remain missing, according to reports available on Wednesday.
Nine Armed Police Force personnel deployed in Timure were initially reported missing after floodwaters reached the area. Security agencies have launched search and rescue operations.
The Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police have been mobilised for rescue and relief work. Two Nepal Army helicopters were also deployed to support operations in the affected region.
Flood Originated From Tibet Side
Officials said the sudden surge entered Nepal from the Tibet side of the border at around 9 a.m. The exact cause of the flooding is still under investigation.
Nepal’s hydrology officials said the disaster did not appear to have been caused by heavy rainfall in Rasuwa. A possible glacial lake outburst has been suggested, but this has not yet been confirmed.
Hydropower Projects Damaged
The flooding has also hit Nepal’s important hydropower infrastructure. The Nepal Electricity Authority said the Rasuwagadhi, Chilime and Trishuli-3A hydropower projects were affected.
A 220 kV substation at the Trishuli-3B hub was also damaged, disrupting electricity supplies in parts of the region.
The impact on the energy sector is significant. Reuters reported that facilities representing around 430 MW of Nepal’s hydropower capacity were affected.
Roads and Bridges Swept Away
The flood has damaged a major transport route connecting Nepal with the China border. Authorities said around 42 kilometres of road between Betrawati and the Rasuwagadhi border crossing were damaged.
Several concrete bridges were also swept away by the powerful floodwaters.
Downstream Areas Put on Alert
Authorities have urged people living near the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers to remain extremely cautious. The floodwaters have moved downstream toward areas of Nuwakot and Dhading.
Residents in vulnerable riverbank settlements have been advised to move to safer and higher ground. The warning has been extended along the Trishuli River corridor, with officials monitoring the situation downstream.
The situation is still developing, and the casualty figure and overall scale of damage may change as rescue teams reach isolated areas.
