Rah-Veer Scheme: Save a Road Accident Victim and Get ₹25,000 Reward
Mahabubabad, August 25, 2026: Mahabubabad District Transport Officer (DTO) Shankar Naik has urged people to learn about the Centre’s Rah-Veer (Good Samaritan) Scheme.
The scheme encourages citizens to help road accident victims without fear. A person who provides immediate assistance and takes a seriously injured victim to a hospital during the Golden Hour can be recognised as a Rah-Veer.
Eligible Rah-Veers can receive a ₹25,000 cash reward and a Certificate of Appreciation. Recognition can be given up to five times a year.
What is the Golden Hour?
The first hour after a serious traumatic injury is known as the Golden Hour. Quick medical attention during this period can significantly improve the chances of saving a victim’s life.
The Rah-Veer guidelines define eligibility around serious motor vehicle accidents. These include cases involving major surgery, at least three days of hospitalisation, brain or spinal cord injuries, or death during treatment.
What Should Citizens Do After an Accident?
DTO Shankar Naik advised people who witness an accident to act quickly.
Citizens should arrange immediate medical help for the injured person. The victim should be taken to the nearest suitable hospital as soon as possible.
After admitting the victim, the helper can provide their details to the hospital. The hospital can then communicate the relevant information to the local police.
The case is subsequently examined through the district-level appraisal process. Eligible Rah-Veers are then considered for the reward and certificate.
Legal Protection for Good Samaritans
The Rah-Veer initiative is based on the Good Samaritan protections notified under Section 134A of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019.
The protections are intended to remove the fear of police and legal complications. A person helping an accident victim in good faith should not be subjected to unnecessary harassment.
The Centre has also highlighted the right of Good Samaritans to avoid unnecessary disclosure of personal details. They are not required to remain involved after the victim has been admitted merely because they provided assistance.
Why Was the Rah-Veer Scheme Introduced?
The main objective is to encourage ordinary citizens to respond quickly when road accidents occur.
Many bystanders hesitate because they fear police questioning or hospital procedures. The scheme aims to reduce that hesitation.
The government revised the earlier Good Samaritan initiative in April 2025. The incentive was increased from ₹5,000 to ₹25,000 per incident, and the scheme was renamed Rah-Veer.
The scheme also provides for 10 national-level Rah-Veer awards every year. Each selected awardee can receive ₹1 lakh, along with a certificate and trophy.
Five Opportunities Every Year
A person can receive recognition under the Rah-Veer Scheme for up to five qualifying incidents in a year.
This means repeated acts of helping accident victims can also be recognised.
DTO Shankar Naik appealed to the people of Mahabubabad to assist accident victims without unnecessary fear or hesitation.
“Saving a person at the right time can save an entire family from tragedy,” he said, stressing the need for wider public awareness about the Rah-Veer initiative.
The transport department urged citizens to remember that quick action during a road accident can make the difference between life and death.
