Anantapur ZP Meeting Turns Stormy Over Irrigation Water Release
Anantapur, August 27, 2026: The Anantapur Zilla Parishad meeting turned tense on Thursday over the issue of irrigation water for farmers.
ZP Chairperson Boya Girijamma and YSRCP members questioned the government over the delay in releasing water to agricultural areas.
The issue led to a heated exchange between YSRCP ZPTC members and leaders from the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
TDP MP BK Parthasarathi and TDP MLA Daggubati Prasad intervened during the discussion. Their intervention further intensified the arguments inside the meeting.
YSRCP ZPTC members alleged that the TDP government had failed to properly utilise available water in major irrigation projects.
They claimed that water was available in the projects, yet it was not being effectively diverted to drought-hit areas.
According to the YSRCP members, Tungabhadra water should have been supplied through the HLC canal. They also demanded better utilisation of Srisailam water through the Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi canal.
The members alleged that the government had failed to provide adequate irrigation support to farmers despite the availability of water resources.
The discussion became increasingly heated as opposition members sought clear answers from the TDP representatives.
YSRCP members also alleged that the ruling party representatives were unable to provide satisfactory answers on the water release issue.
The confrontation turned the Zilla Parishad meeting into a politically charged session.
Farmers’ Irrigation Demand Takes Centre Stage
Irrigation remains a critical issue in the drought-prone areas of Anantapur district. Farmers depend heavily on canal systems and major irrigation projects for agricultural needs.
