Nepal Flash Floods: Karnataka Seeks Details of Stranded Residents, Priyank Kharge Urges Families to Contact Police
Bengaluru: The Karnataka government is working to identify residents from the state who may be stranded in Nepal following devastating flash floods along the Nepal-Tibet border.
Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge said authorities are still trying to establish the exact number of Karnataka residents affected by the disaster.
“We are trying to ascertain the exact number of people from Karnataka stranded,” Kharge said. He urged relatives to contact their nearest police station if they have information about anyone missing or stranded.
Kharge said the state government is coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to gather details and assist affected Karnataka residents. The government is also working to keep communication channels open for families seeking updates.
Karnataka activates emergency helplines
The Karnataka State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) has activated helplines to receive information about people stranded in Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region.
Families can contact the control room at 1070 or 080-22253707. They can also email details to seockarnataka@gmail.com.
The state has also asked stranded persons, relatives and tour operators to provide relevant details. This information will help authorities coordinate with Indian missions and central agencies for rescue and evacuation.
Several Karnataka residents already reported stranded
The Karnataka government later compiled details of 13 residents stranded in Nepal and Tibet, including 11 from Bengaluru Urban, one from Mysuru and one from Dharwad district. Most were reported to be in Timure in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, while some were in Darchen in Tibet.
Authorities have also established contact with two Karnataka residents from Kalaburagi district who were stranded in the affected region.
The situation remains fluid as communication networks have been disrupted in several areas. Rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate missing people and bring stranded travellers to safety.
Nepal floods leave hundreds missing
The flash floods have caused widespread destruction near the Nepal-Tibet border, affecting roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure. Rescue operations have been difficult because of the mountainous terrain and damaged connectivity.
Nepal’s authorities reported a sharp rise in the death toll on August 28, with 469 deaths reported from the disaster. More than 1,500 people were still unaccounted for across the affected areas, according to reports.
The disaster has also affected Indian pilgrims and tourists travelling through Nepal, including people on the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage route.
What families should do
Families who believe a Karnataka resident may be stranded or missing should immediately share the person’s details with the nearest police station or district police authorities.
They can also contact the Karnataka emergency control room for assistance. Early reporting can help authorities verify information and coordinate with central agencies.
