Swatantra Bhardwaj Sent to One-Day Judicial Custody by Delhi Court

New Delhi: Social media influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj has been sent to one-day judicial custody by a Delhi court, marking a fresh development in the ongoing Jantar Mantar assault case.

Bhardwaj was produced virtually before the Patiala House Court on Sunday. The court ordered one day of judicial custody. The matter is scheduled to come up again on Monday.

Delhi Police had earlier secured one day of police custody for questioning. Investigators said the probe was linked to fresh evidence that emerged after a viral podcast interview involving Bhardwaj.

Police had detained Bhardwaj in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, before formally arresting him. The action followed protests demanding his arrest over an alleged assault during a Jantar Mantar demonstration.

Jantar Mantar Assault Case

The case relates to an alleged assault on Sanjay Azad, the father of a minor activist. The incident reportedly took place during a protest at Jantar Mantar in July.

Police had initially registered a case involving allegations of voluntarily causing hurt and wrongful restraint. The FIR was later expanded with additional provisions, including sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and criminal intimidation.

A separate case has also been registered under the POCSO Act following allegations concerning online threats and harassment involving the minor activist. Police have said Bhardwaj is not the main accused in that POCSO case.

Viral Podcast Triggered Fresh Action

The controversy intensified after a podcast featuring Bhardwaj went viral. Reports said he spoke about the alleged assault during the interview.

The comments led to renewed demands for police action. Bhardwaj has also reportedly maintained that his actions were in self-defence.

Police are continuing to examine the allegations, social media posts and other evidence connected with the case.

Bail Plea Expected

According to the latest report, Bhardwaj’s legal representatives are expected to move a bail application during the next hearing. The court is scheduled to hear the matter again on Monday.

The investigation remains underway. Allegations against Bhardwaj have not been finally established by a court.
