Demolition Notices Target CM’s Brother’s Properties in Durgam Cheruvu Crackdown

In a decisive action against encroachments around Durgam Cheruvu Lake, the Telangana government issued demolition notices on Wednesday to several high-profile structures, including the residence and office of A Tirupathi Reddy, brother of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. The notices were placed on properties within the Madapur Amar Cooperative Society, stipulating that these structures fall within the lake’s Non-Development Zone and must be removed within 30 days.Revenue officials, spearheaded by the Rangareddy District Collector and Serilingampally Deputy Collector, extended similar notices to residents of Nectars Colony, Doctors Colony, Kavuri Hills, and Amar Society, all adjacent to the lake. Issued under Section 23(1) of the WALTA Act, these notices demand the voluntary demolition of encroaching structures. Non-compliance will result in forced demolitions by the authorities. The crackdown has sparked widespread concern among residents and business owners, with hundreds of houses and commercial properties receiving notices on the same day.Durgam Cheruvu, also known as the ‘Secret Lake,’ has faced significant encroachment over the years, reducing its area from an estimated 100 acres to just 84 acres. Although a Non-Development Zone designation was issued a decade ago, the final notification necessary to enforce protections was never completed, leading to unchecked encroachments. The recent government action is part of a larger initiative to reclaim public land and safeguard the lake from further encroachment, targeting not only high-profile individuals but also broader encroachments affecting the lake’s ecosystem and public access.
