*Hyderabad, September 10, 2024*: The Madhapur police have registered a case following a dramatic protest on September 8, 2024, when a group of individuals attempted self-immolation to stop a demolition operation at Sunnam Cheruvu, Guttalabegumpet. The demolition was ordered by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRAA) to remove illegal constructions within the Full Tank Level (FTL) zone of the lake.The case was filed based on a complaint from A. Lakshminarayana, an Assistant Executive Engineer with the North Tanks Division, Buddhabhavan, Secunderabad. According to Lakshminarayana, while executing his duties in line with HYDRAA’s orders, three individuals – Venkatesh (35), his wife Lakshmi (28), and his brother Naresh (28) – obstructed the demolition by threatening self-immolation. The trio allegedly poured kerosene on themselves in an attempt to halt the ongoing operations at Survey No. 12, Sunnam Cheruvu, around 11:30 a.m.Venkatesh, a driver by profession, along with Lakshmi, a daily wage earner, and Naresh, also a driver, reportedly aimed to prevent the demolition of their residence in the FTL zone. Their act of protest temporarily halted the demolition process, prompting Lakshminarayana to file a complaint with the police, seeking legal action against the protesters for obstructing a public servant.Madhapur police have registered a case under Cr. No: 1193/2024, invoking sections 132 read with 3(5) of the BNS, as the investigation into the incident continues.The attempted self-immolation has drawn attention to ongoing tensions surrounding the demolition of illegal constructions in Hyderabad’s lakes and FTL zones, a move initiated to restore water bodies and prevent encroachments.
