Opposition Hits Back at Bill Allowing PM and CMs’ Removal After 30 Days in Jail

New Delhi | August 24, 2025:

The controversial bill proposing the removal of Prime Ministers and Chief Ministers after 30 days of imprisonment has triggered sharp opposition from key political parties. Both the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) have declared they will not participate in the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) discussions on the proposed law.

TMC Rejects Bill as “Unconstitutional”

The Trinamool Congress described the move as “extraordinary and dangerous”, warning that it undermines the democratic framework of India. TMC leaders argued that the bill violates the principle of political accountability by allowing a temporary jail term to disqualify elected heads of governments.

SP Slams Attack on Federal Structure

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav strongly opposed the bill, calling it a *direct threat to India’s federal structure. He stated that the legislation suffers from *serious constitutional flaws and could destabilize state governments by weaponizing legal cases against sitting Chief Ministers.

“This bill is fundamentally flawed. It weakens democracy and goes against the spirit of cooperative federalism,” Yadav said.

Pressure Mounts on Congress and INDIA Bloc

The SP’s decision has put additional pressure on the Congress, which is still weighing its official stand. With both TMC and SP distancing themselves from the JPC, opposition unity under the INDIA bloc faces fresh challenges. Political observers believe this could deepen rifts within the alliance ahead of upcoming state elections.

Broader Political Implications

Analysts caution that such a bill, if passed, could set a dangerous precedent where political rivals may misuse judicial processes to unseat democratically elected leaders. The debate also highlights rising tensions between the ruling party and the opposition over institutional independence and federal rights.
