Beggar Dies, Relatives Find ₹8.40 Lakh Saved in Her Modest House in Karnataka

Mandya, Karnataka: A 70-year-old woman who survived by begging in Mandya has left neighbours shocked after her relatives discovered ₹8.40 lakh in cash at her modest home following her death on Sunday.

Noorunnisa lived alone in a small shanty in Guttalu Layout, Mandya, and reportedly depended on alms given by local residents for her livelihood.

After her death, relatives and members of the local community searched her house and found bundles of currency notes along with sacks of coins. The money was counted in the presence of her relatives and was found to total ₹8.40 lakh.

“We came to know after her death that she had saved some money. When we counted it in front of her relatives, it came to ₹8.40 lakh. We handed over the amount to her relatives,” said Mukhtar Ahmed, vice-president of a local mosque.

The discovery has left neighbours surprised, as few were aware that Noorunnisa had accumulated such a substantial amount despite living a simple life and relying on alms.
