Bharat NCAP 2.0 to Roll Out in October 2027, Says Nitin Gadkari

New Delhi: The Centre plans to introduce Bharat NCAP 2.0 from October 2027, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Thursday.

The upgraded programme will take a broader approach to vehicle safety. It will assess the entire safety chain linked to a crash, Gadkari said.

The announcement was made during the 66th SIAM Annual Convention. Gadkari highlighted the need for stronger measures to reduce road accidents in India.

Bharat NCAP 2.0 to Cover Wider Safety Parameters

The existing Bharat NCAP focuses on crash-testing passenger vehicles. It gives cars safety ratings based on their performance in controlled crash tests.

Bharat NCAP 2.0 will expand this approach. The new framework is expected to cover crash avoidance, occupant protection, pedestrian safety and post-crash care.

The move is aimed at making vehicle safety assessments more comprehensive. It will also bring greater attention to technologies that can help prevent crashes.

Gadkari Highlights India’s Road Safety Challenge

Gadkari said road accidents remain a major concern for India. He cited around five lakh road accidents and 1.8 lakh deaths every year.

The minister said reducing these numbers requires action across the entire safety chain. He also stressed the importance of new technologies in improving road safety.

Driver Behaviour Also Under Focus

Gadkari also spoke about plans for a graded points system for driving licences and vehicle registration certificates.

Under the proposed system, traffic violations could lead to the loss of points. Repeated violations may eventually result in licence suspension or cancellation.

Responsible drivers could receive incentives through insurance companies and other benefits, Gadkari said.

The government is also seeking greater participation from the automobile industry in driver training and vehicle fitness initiatives.
