CM Revanth Reddy Launches Musi River Rejuvenation Project; Promises Jobs, Clean Water and a Modern Hyderabad

Hyderabad | September 9, 2025

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has unveiled an ambitious vision to transform Hyderabad into a *world-class city over the next decade, while also ensuring **employment opportunities for lakhs of people. Speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the *Musi River Rejuvenation Project at Gandipet, the Chief Minister emphasized that development would go hand in hand with environmental restoration and public welfare.

₹7,360 Crore Project to Revive Musi River

The government has initiated the Musi River Rejuvenation Project with an estimated cost of *₹7,360 crore, aiming to complete it within two years. Under this plan, water from the *Godavari River will be diverted to fill Usman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs to meet the drinking water needs of twin cities.

  • 20 TMC of Godavari water will be brought,
  • 17.5 TMC allocated for drinking water supply,
  • 2.5 TMC earmarked specifically for reviving Musi River.

A photo exhibition showcased the project’s scope and vision during the event.

Hyderabad’s Growing Needs

Highlighting the challenges of a fast-expanding city, the CM stated:

  • Hyderabad’s population grows by 3% every year.
  • The city already houses over 1.5 crore residents.
  • Existing Krishna River water supply is no longer sufficient.

He stressed that the transfer of Godavari water is essential not only to ensure safe drinking water but also to cleanse Musi of decades of pollution.

Public Health at Stake

CM Revanth Reddy pointed out that polluted Musi waters have caused severe health crises in areas like *LB Nagar, Ibrahimpatnam, Bhongir, and Aler. Contaminated water has harmed livestock and endangered human lives, with reports of *birth defects among newborns due to toxic water exposure.

Comparing with other states, he questioned:

“If Gujarat could rejuvenate the Sabarmati, Uttar Pradesh the Ganga, and Delhi the Yamuna, why can’t we revive Musi for the four crore people of Telangana?”

Political Will Beyond Parties

The CM clarified that the project was *not political but developmental, citing its roots in earlier initiatives like **Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s Pranahita-Chevella project (2008). Telangana’s government is in talks with *Maharashtra to resolve objections regarding water levels at the *Tummadihatti project site, hoping for a middle ground to ensure irrigation for *over two lakh acres in the Adilabad region.

Future plans include:

  • Expanding irrigation to Chevella, Vikarabad, Tandur, and Parigi.
  • Developing Budvel as a major hub.
  • Advancing the Gateway of Hyderabad Project to boost infrastructure and employment.
