Hyderabad, August 5:
In a significant political push for backward class representation, several senior Telangana Congress leaders have embarked on a three-day campaign in New Delhi, demanding 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs). Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Seethakka, along with multiple MLAs and BC associations, flew out of Shamshabad airport on Tuesday to participate in the national-level demonstration.
This move is part of the Congress party’s broader commitment to social equity and empowerment of marginalized communities. Speaking before departure, BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar reiterated that the initiative was rooted in the ideals championed by Rahul Gandhi.
“We conducted a state-wide, door-to-door survey to identify the actual population share of SCs, STs, and BCs,” said Minister Prabhakar.
Based on these findings, a sub-committee reviewed the data, following which the Telangana State Cabinet and the Legislative Assembly passed a resolution approving 42% reservation for BCs. The proposed bill has already been forwarded to the President of India via the Governor’s office.
However, the minister accused the BJP of attempting to stall the bill in Delhi, despite previously supporting it in the state assembly. He claimed that the BJP was misleading the public by using the Muslim reservation issue as a diversion.
Prabhakar appealed to all political parties and civil society groups committed to social justice to support their cause in Delhi. “This is not just a Congress issue. It’s a national fight for equal rights,” he said.
The Congress party has urged its members to fully participate in the planned events scheduled on August 5, 6, and 7 in the national capital. These programs are being organized under the guidance of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and the Telangana state leadership.
This strong mobilization effort is expected to draw national attention to the BC reservation demand and apply pressure on the central government to take decisive action.
