Fresh Applications for Ration Cards Planned in Telangana, Cabinet Committee Decides

Hyderabad, [26 july 2024] : In a significant policy shift, the Telangana State government led by Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy has announced plans to invite fresh applications for new ration cards, superseding earlier ‘Praja Palana’ applications. This decision, revealed during a session in the Legislative Council on Wednesday, aims to streamline the distribution process and ensure efficient targeting of Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy clarified that the upcoming round of applications would cover not only new ration cards but also new Aarogyasri cards, which will now be issued separately. While detailing the government’s approach, he emphasized that eligibility for ration cards would adhere strictly to recommendations from a Cabinet sub-committee, currently under review. This committee is expected to finalize guidelines within the next few weeks, incorporating parameters like income, landholding, and other socio-economic factors.”We are considering expanding the benefits beyond just rice to include other essential commodities for ration card holders,” stated Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, responding to queries raised by members of the Council. He assured that existing ration cards would remain valid until the new ones are issued, alleviating concerns about interruptions in essential supplies. The move comes amidst growing scrutiny and feedback from various quarters, including Congress MLCs who pressed for expedited processing of pending applications received through public outreach initiatives like Praja Darbar and Praja Palana. Addressing these concerns, the Minister assured that the government was committed to resolving any pending issues swiftly. In contrast, former Minister Satyavathi Rathod expressed dissatisfaction over the delay, highlighting achievements under the previous administration while urging faster action to address the needs of vulnerable populations awaiting assistance.
