Gold Jewellery Accidentally Thrown Into Drain After Varalakshmi Vratam in Visakhapatnam
Visakhapatnam: A family in Gajuwaka had a frightening experience after accidentally throwing gold jewellery into a drainage canal along with flowers and other puja materials. The jewellery was later recovered by Steel Plant police after an extensive search.
The incident took place in the Srinagar area of Gajuwaka and came to light recently. According to reports, the family had performed Varalakshmi Vratam with devotion on August 21. They decorated the deity with nearly eight tolas of gold jewellery.
As part of their family tradition, the jewellery was kept near the deity for three days. On August 23, Ramesh began removing the ornaments along with the puja materials.
He managed to take away a three-tola necklace and kasu chain. However, he failed to notice several other ornaments hidden among the flowers.
These included a bangle, two chains and three rings, weighing around five tolas in total. The family unknowingly wrapped the used flowers and puja materials in a red cloth.
The bundle was then thrown into a drainage canal beneath the Steel Plant railway bridge near Durga Nagar.
The family realised the mistake only after returning home. They immediately went back to the drainage canal and searched for the jewellery. Their initial efforts, however, proved unsuccessful.
The worried couple then approached the Steel Plant Police Station and reported the missing gold.
Police acted quickly after receiving the complaint. CI Keshava Rao sent personnel to the spot to begin the search.
With the help of a JCB, police diverted the flow of water and reduced the speed of the drainage. Personnel then searched the canal carefully.
The jewellery was found scattered at different spots in the canal. Police recovered the ornaments one by one and safely handed them back to Ramesh and Divya.
The family was relieved to get back the gold they had believed was lost. They also thanked the police for their prompt response and efforts.
Police advised people to remain particularly careful with valuables while performing religious rituals and disposing of used puja materials.
