Harish Rao Placed Under House Arrest Ahead of Warangal Visit Over GO 97 Protest
Hyderabad, August 27, 2026: Former Telangana minister and BRS MLA T. Harish Rao was placed under house arrest by police on Thursday.
Police stopped him from travelling to Warangal to meet protesting polytechnic students. The students are demanding the withdrawal of GO 97.
Harish Rao Was Heading to Warangal
Harish Rao had planned to visit Warangal and express solidarity with the students. Polytechnic students have been protesting against GO 97 for several days.
The students oppose the proposed changes involving polytechnic education. Reports say the government plans to bring polytechnic colleges under the Young India Skill University framework.
Police reached Harish Rao’s residence in Kokapet, Hyderabad, on Thursday morning. They reportedly informed him that permission had not been granted for his participation in the proposed protest.
He was subsequently prevented from leaving his residence. BRS leaders and supporters also gathered outside the house after learning about the action.
Polytechnic Students Continue Protest
Polytechnic students across Telangana have been demanding that GO 97 be withdrawn. Protests have also been reported in parts of the erstwhile Warangal region.
The students say the proposed changes could affect the future of thousands of diploma students. Harish Rao has publicly supported their demand and called for the government order to be withdrawn.
The latest house arrest has added another political dimension to the ongoing student protests. Further developments are expected as the agitation continues.
