Hyderabad — September 6, 2025
A new cyber fraud has surfaced in Hyderabad, where two individuals fell prey to malicious APK files sent via WhatsApp, under the pretense of paying RTO challans. The total loss? A staggering ₹6 lakh. Cybercrime officials are urging the public to be extremely cautious.
How the Scam Unfolded
- In one incident, a 48-year-old man received a file labeled *“RTO challan”. He clicked and installed it—only to later see *unauthorized debits of ₹51,226 and ₹50,000 from his account.
- In the other case, a 41-year-old noticed *four withdrawals totaling ₹5 lakh. Investigators confirmed that an APK named *“RTA challan 140.apk” had silently compromised his phone.
Why the Scam Is So Dangerous
Malicious APK files masquerade as legitimate apps. Once installed, they often gain access to sensitive bank details and banking apps. Victims may face unauthorized transactions and severe financial harm.
Cybercrime Officials Warn
Authorities are sounding the alarm:
- Never click links or download APK files from unknown WhatsApp contacts.
- Only install apps from official sources like the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Do not share your banking details, card information, or OTPs.
- If you spot suspicious bank activity, report immediately via the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in) or call the helpline *1930. Assistance is also available at the Hyderabad cybercrime control: *WhatsApp/Call 8712665171.
