Kapra Lake Ganesh Immersion: HYDRAA Rules Out Idol Immersion, Suggests Baby Pond for Small Idols
Hyderabad: Ganesh idol immersion will not be permitted in Kapra Lake this year, HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath has said, citing the waterbody’s ecological importance and ongoing restoration efforts.
Ranganath made the remarks during an inspection of development works at Kapra Lake. He also met representatives of the Bhagyanagar Utsav Committee and explained the need to protect the lake’s ecosystem.
The commissioner suggested using the baby pond near Kapra Lake for immersing smaller Ganesh idols. Organisers were also advised to explore alternative arrangements for immersing larger idols.
Kapra Lake recognised for ecological importance
Kapra Lake is not merely a water storage body. It plays an important role in the urban environment, including floodwater storage, groundwater recharge and supporting bird habitats.
HYDRAA is currently undertaking restoration and development works at the lake. The restoration is aimed at improving the waterbody while protecting its ecological functions.
Kapra Lake has also remained a focus of conservation efforts by local residents and environmental groups. Earlier clean-up drives have highlighted concerns over plastic and other waste affecting the lake and its birdlife.
Over 470 migratory birds reportedly use the lake
According to HYDRAA, Kapra Lake provides a habitat for more than 470 migratory birds arriving from different parts of the world, including Australia and Europe.
During his visit, Ranganath viewed a photo exhibition featuring migratory birds found around the lake. He stressed that protecting the biodiversity of Kapra Lake is a collective responsibility.
The lake is also among the waterbodies being considered for broader conservation and sustainable development initiatives in Hyderabad. Kapra Lake was included among six major lakes identified for detailed development planning, with ecological safeguards forming part of the proposed plans.
HYDRAA focusing on lake restoration
The ongoing works cover the 113-acre Kapra Lake, according to the information shared during the inspection.
HYDRAA said the restoration focuses on several environmental objectives. These include floodwater storage, groundwater recharge, biodiversity protection and providing a suitable habitat for birds.
The agency has also been promoting dedicated baby ponds at city lakes for safer and more environmentally friendly Ganesh idol immersion. Such facilities are intended to reduce pressure on the main waterbodies during the festival.
Private patta landowners extend cooperation
Ranganath said around 70 per cent of the area associated with Kapra Lake comprises private patta lands. He noted that landowners had come forward and extended cooperation for the lake’s development.
Representatives of the Kapra Lake Revival Group also met the HYDRAA Commissioner. They requested comprehensive restoration of the waterbody and measures to protect its surrounding environment.
The commissioner said protecting the lake’s boundaries, preventing encroachments and controlling pollution are essential parts of lake conservation.
Kapra Cheruvu is also listed by HMDA under its lake protection framework for boundary demarcation and encroachment removal.
Eco-friendly Ganesh celebrations urged
The decision comes ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi, which will be celebrated in Hyderabad on September 14, 2026. Municipal authorities have already been reviewing arrangements involving immersion points, baby ponds, procession routes, sanitation and safety measures.
HYDRAA has separately urged citizens to choose environmentally friendly celebrations and use clay Ganesh idols to reduce pollution in lakes.
Ranganath appealed to festival organisers and devotees to cooperate with the authorities. He stressed that religious celebrations and environmental protection should go hand in hand.
Officials accompanying the inspection included Uppal Zonal Commissioner Radhika Gupta, HYDRAA ACP Uma Maheshwar Rao, and Vimos Technocrats Director Younus, who is overseeing lake development works.
