Karnataka Park Land Bill: Govt Will Reintroduce Bill for Debate, Says Priyank Kharge
Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has decided to withdraw the controversial bill that allows the use of up to 5% of government park and garden land for public purposes.
The decision comes amid strong protests from citizens, environmental groups and the Opposition. The BJP has also opposed the move, raising concerns over the protection of Bengaluru’s green spaces.
Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge defended the government’s position. He said the government does not function according to the wishes of the BJP.
He also indicated that the government intends to bring the legislation back before the Assembly. The move would allow lawmakers to debate the provisions and raise their concerns.
The controversy centres on amendments to the Karnataka Government Parks (Preservation) Act. The amendment permits the government to alienate up to 5% of park land through mechanisms such as sale, lease, gift or exchange for specified public purposes.
The government has maintained that the provision is meant for public utility projects. It has said the provision applies to projects undertaken by government departments, statutory authorities, public sector companies or local bodies.
However, critics fear the amendment could eventually open the door to commercial development and reduce Bengaluru’s valuable green cover.
The issue gained momentum after citizen groups and park walkers organised protests, including demonstrations linked to the protection of Lalbagh. Bengaluru has more than 1,300 parks, making the issue particularly sensitive among residents.
Chief Minister D K Shivakumar had earlier said the government was open to suggestions from the Opposition and the public. He also indicated that the matter could be discussed again in the legislature.
The latest decision is therefore being seen as an attempt to address the growing controversy while keeping the government’s proposal open for further discussion.
