Kerala Wedding Bus Accident: Tourist Bus Overturns in Ernakulam After Swerving to Avoid Scooter
Kochi, August 27, 2026: A major tragedy was narrowly avoided in Kerala’s Ernakulam district on Thursday after a tourist bus carrying a wedding party overturned at Koothattukulam.
The accident took place at Kakkoor, near Koothattukulam, on the Koothattukulam–Piravom route. The bus was travelling from Kalady towards Elanji with members of a wedding party on board.
According to initial reports, the bus driver suddenly swerved to avoid a scooter that turned right across the road. The bus then lost control and overturned near a petrol pump.
CCTV Captures Narrow Escape
CCTV footage from a nearby fuel station captured the dramatic sequence.
The visuals reportedly show the scooter moving ahead of the bus before suddenly turning towards the right. The bus driver appears to brake and swerve sharply to avoid a collision.
The bus then moved towards the petrol pump and overturned. The incident also narrowly missed other motorists near the fuel station.
Several Passengers Injured
Reports put the number of people travelling on the bus at around 35. Several passengers suffered injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Initial reports differ on the exact number and severity of injuries. Some local reports said around 30 people were injured, with four suffering serious injuries. Another report said around 20 passengers sustained minor injuries and remained stable.
The injured were shifted to private hospitals in and around Koothattukulam. Police and local residents helped rescue passengers from the overturned vehicle.
Rain and Sudden Turn Under Scanner
Reports said the road was wet at the time of the accident. The slippery surface may have contributed to the bus losing control after the sudden manoeuvre.
Police are examining CCTV footage to establish the exact sequence of events. Officials are also expected to verify the speed of the bus and the actions of the scooter rider before determining responsibility.
The accident could have been far more serious had the bus struck the fuel dispensers at the petrol station. The fact that it stopped short of causing such damage helped prevent a potentially dangerous situation.

The Koothattukulam crash once again highlights the risks created by sudden lane changes and turns on busy roads.
Drivers and two-wheeler riders are advised to check surrounding traffic before changing direction. Proper use of indicators is especially important when turning across a moving lane.
