In a significant move to provide food security to the deserving poor, the Andhra Pradesh state government is preparing to issue new ration cards. The government is currently working on updating and modifying the existing cards, adding eligible family members to ensure that new cards reach those in need. A final decision on this initiative will be taken in the next cabinet meeting.At present, there are 1,48,43,671 ration cards in Andhra Pradesh. Out of these, only 89 lakh beneficiaries receive essential commodities under the Central Government’s Food Security Act. The cost of providing commodities to the remaining 59,43,671 ration cardholders is borne by the state government.The issuance of new ration cards is expected to coincide with the celebration of the 100-day rule of the NDA government in Andhra Pradesh. Along with the new cards, the state government is also focused on addressing other issues within the Civil Supplies Department, aiming to provide timely solutions to ensure that essential goods reach every household.
