Tirupati, Aug 23, 2025:
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Director General of Police (DGP) of Andhra Pradesh regarding violent incidents during the *Tirupati Deputy Mayor by-election. The commission directed the DGP to submit a detailed *investigation report within six weeks.
Complaint by YSRCP MP Gurumurthy
The NHRC’s action follows a complaint by YSRCP MP Gurumurthy, who alleged that party leaders were attacked by miscreants during the election. He stated that despite naming the accused in the complaint, police registered a case against “unknown persons,” raising questions about the transparency of the probe.
Gurumurthy also submitted video footage broadcast by TV channels at the time of the incident, claiming the evidence clearly showed the attackers.
Violence Inside SVU Campus
The violence reportedly broke out within the Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) campus, where clashes disrupted the election process. According to eyewitnesses, rowdy elements targeted YSRCP leaders, leading to chaos and injuries.
The NHRC had earlier received a report from the DGP on previous attacks against YSRCP leaders, which were also attributed to “unidentified persons.” With repeated complaints surfacing, the Commission has now demanded a fresh inquiry and updated report.
Political and Public Reactions
The notice has triggered political debate in Andhra Pradesh. YSRCP leaders welcomed the NHRC’s intervention, claiming it will ensure accountability. Opposition parties, however, argue that the violence reflects the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the state.
Legal experts note that NHRC’s directive highlights the importance of protecting democratic rights during elections and ensuring police neutrality in politically sensitive cases.
