Now You Can’t Escape Traffic Fines: AI Cameras to Catch Violations Automatically Across Andhra Pradesh

Hyderabad, July 19, 2025 –

Vehicle owners in Andhra Pradesh who often flout traffic rules, skip taxes, or overload goods now face a high-tech crackdown. The state transport department is rolling out AI-powered Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to detect and penalize violators—without ever stopping the vehicle.

Gone are the days when traffic police had to manually stop vehicles to issue challans. Now, fines will be generated automatically as AI-based surveillance systems identify violators in real-time and alert authorities instantly.

What Are ANPR Cameras?

The Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system uses artificial intelligence to scan vehicle number plates instantly. Once a vehicle breaks a rule—whether it’s overloading, driving without paying road tax, or speeding—the system captures the plate, links it to official transport records, and sends alerts to authorities.

Cameras Across the State: Project Highlights

  • The government has approved the installation of 60 ANPR cameras in 30 high-traffic locations.
  • ₹3.3 crore has been sanctioned for this phase.
  • The initiative is being led by Vikas Raj, Special Chief Secretary of the Transport Department.
  • The cameras will function 24/7 and integrate with transport and enforcement databases.
  • No manual intervention needed to fine violators—everything happens through automated AI detection.

Trial Run Successful in Kamareddy

During a recent pilot at the Kamareddy checkpost, the AI cameras identified rule-breaking vehicles in mere seconds. The real-time data allowed officers to act immediately without halting all vehicles at the checkpoint.

Authorities noted that the AI system greatly reduced manual workload, while enhancing compliance and enforcement efficiency.

How the System Works

  1. AI captures the number plate using high-definition cameras.
  2. Vehicle details are fetched from government databases.
  3. If any violation (like tax evasion or overloading) is found, a challan is generated instantly.
  4. Data is sent directly to enforcement teams for necessary action.
  5. Offenders receive notifications and fines digitally.

This approach minimizes human interference, reduces bribery, and ensures rule-breakers are held accountable.

No More Escaping Fines

Authorities confirmed that the cameras will eventually make it unnecessary to stop every vehicle on the road. Instead, only defaulters will be flagged—ensuring smoother traffic flow and enhanced road safety.

Transport officials have also warned that trying to avoid cameras won’t help, as information is relayed across multiple checkpoints within seconds. Vehicles can be intercepted even before reaching the next town.

Government’s Message to Citizens

The Andhra Pradesh government urges all vehicle owners to *ensure road tax is paid, **avoid overloading, and *follow traffic rules strictly to avoid automated fines. With AI surveillance going statewide, enforcement is about to become smarter, faster, and more effective.
