New Delhi, July 24, 2025 —
In a strongly worded rebuke, the Supreme Court of India came down heavily on the Telangana government over the large-scale destruction of forest land near the University of Hyderabad (HCU). The apex court questioned the administration’s overnight actions involving multiple bulldozers and warned of possible jail time for officials if environmental violations continue.
30–40 Bulldozers Deployed Overnight Raises Serious Concerns
Chief Justice *B.R. Gavai, heading the bench, sharply criticized the state government for deploying *30 to 40 bulldozers over a weekend to fell trees in a forested area near HCU. The court questioned the urgency and secrecy behind the move.
“What was the need to destroy forests overnight with dozens of bulldozers?” asked Justice Gavai.
“Is development so urgent that nature must pay the price?”
Stern Warning: Protect Forests or Face Jail
The Supreme Court did not mince words. It posed a direct ultimatum to the Revanth Reddy-led government:
“Decide whether you want to protect forests or send your officials to jail.”
The court emphasized that the responsibility of conserving forest cover lies solely with the state government and rejected the notion that felling trees could be justified under the label of “sustainable development.”
Chief Justice Questions the Definition of Development
Justice Gavai further remarked that true development must be inclusive and environmentally responsible. Cutting down hundreds of trees and justifying it under urban growth was unacceptable.
“You cannot hide behind the term ‘sustainable development’ while destroying forests,” he added.
