Telangana Bike Taxis May Need Yellow Number Plates; Rapido, Uber and Ola Riders Face Higher Costs
Hyderabad: Bike taxi services in Telangana could soon face tighter transport regulations, with the government considering a requirement for commercial yellow number plates on vehicles used by platforms such as Rapido, Uber and Ola.
Under the proposed arrangement, motorcycles may be allowed to operate as bike taxis only after being converted to commercial registration. This could significantly increase the compliance costs for riders.
According to the proposal, owners may have to pay around Rs 3,000 as a conversion charge to change a private motorcycle to a yellow commercial number plate.
The expenses may not end there. Riders could also have to bear commercial road tax, quarterly tax, fitness certificate renewal charges, green tax and permit fees.
The Telangana Transport Department already provides separate services for permits, fitness certificates, quarterly tax and green tax for vehicles.
Thousands of Bike Taxis Could Be Affected
The proposed changes have raised concerns among bike taxi riders and users.
Reports suggest that more than 18,000 bike taxis are currently operating in Telangana. If riders are required to meet the additional commercial requirements, many may find the costs difficult to manage.
That could reduce the number of motorcycles available through bike taxi platforms.
For daily commuters, this may create another problem. Bike taxis have become a low-cost option for short-distance travel, especially in congested urban areas.
Recent national developments have also highlighted the growing importance of bike taxis. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari recently said private two-wheelers could be permitted to operate as bike taxis, while urging states to implement the policy.
Cab and Auto Fares Could Rise
If a large number of bike taxis leave the market, commuters could have fewer affordable transport options.
Demand may shift towards app-based cabs and auto-rickshaws. This could put upward pressure on fares, particularly during peak hours.
For many passengers, the attraction of bike taxis is their relatively low cost and ability to move quickly through traffic.
The industry is already facing regulatory uncertainty across India, with states taking different approaches to bike taxi operations.
Regulatory Clarity Needed
The proposed yellow number plate requirement could bring bike taxis under a more clearly defined commercial transport framework.
However, riders are likely to seek clarity on the total cost of conversion and the exact permit, tax and fitness requirements.
The Telangana Transport Department’s official system lists separate facilities for permit applications, fitness services, quarterly tax and green tax payments.
The key question now is whether the government will formally notify the proposed requirements and when they would come into force.
Until an official notification is issued, the reported changes should be treated as a proposal rather than a final rule.
