Hyderabad, July 21: Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka has directed officials to maximize power generation at state-run thermal power plants to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply amid concerns over the impact of El Niño on hydropower generation.
Chairing a review meeting of the Energy Department at Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Praja Bhavan on Tuesday, the Deputy CM instructed officials to take all necessary measures to meet the state’s growing electricity demand without causing inconvenience to consumers.
Bhatti Vikramarka announced that he will soon conduct a field inspection of Singareni coal mines to ensure adequate and continuous supply of quality coal to all thermal power stations in Telangana. The visit will focus on coal production, transportation, quality, and resolving bottlenecks affecting supply.
The Deputy CM said the Congress government accelerated the construction of the Yadadri Thermal Power Station after coming to power and secured the required environmental clearances that were pending earlier. He stated that the first 800 MW unit became operational in 2025, followed by three additional 800 MW units during 2025-26 and 2026-27, taking Telangana Genco’s total thermal power generation capacity to 7,180 MW.
Despite coal supply challenges, Telangana Genco generated 27,908 million units of electricity during 2025-26, meeting 31% of the state’s total power demand, up from 25.14% in 2024-25. The government aims to increase Genco’s contribution to 40% by improving coal availability
Bhatti also announced that the fifth unit of the Yadadri Thermal Power Station is expected to be commissioned in September 2026
The Deputy CM criticized the previous government for failing to expand Singareni’s coal production capacity, alleging that it did not acquire new coal blocks and prevented Singareni from participating in coal mine auctions, leading to current coal supply constraints.
The review meeting was attended by Energy Department Special Chief Secretary Naveen Mittal, Telangana Genco CMD Dr. S. Harish, directors, and other senior officials.
