Hyderabad, September 1, 2025 –
In a major development, the Telangana government has officially decided to hand over the controversial Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The decision comes after the *Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose Commission of Inquiry, constituted earlier this year, submitted its detailed report on *July 31, 2025, highlighting alleged irregularities, misuse of public funds, and corruption in the construction of the Medigadda, Annaram, and Sundilla barrages.
On *August 4, 2025, the state cabinet approved the report and decided to present it in the upcoming Assembly session for a comprehensive discussion. Following this, the government has now opted for a *CBI investigation to ensure accountability and transparency.
Allegations Against Kaleshwaram Project
The Kaleshwaram Project, touted as one of the world’s largest lift irrigation projects, was initiated to provide irrigation water to 37 lakh acres, drinking water to multiple districts, and support Hyderabad’s water needs. However, in the past two years, the project has faced severe criticism due to:
- Structural damages to Medigadda barrage pillars.
- Cost escalation from the initial ₹40,000 crore estimate to nearly ₹1.2 lakh crore.
- Accusations of corruption and irregularities in design, construction, and awarding of contracts.
- Technical flaws, as flagged by engineering experts and the National Dam Safety Authority.
Government’s Stand
Speaking on the decision, state officials said that a CBI probe was necessary to ensure an impartial investigation since the matter involves thousands of crores of public money. The move also aims to fix accountability on contractors, consultants, and officials allegedly involved in the irregularities.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy earlier stated that the project had become a “classic example of how corruption can derail public infrastructure.” He assured that those responsible would face legal action after the CBI submits its findings.
Opposition Reaction
The opposition parties, particularly BRS (Bharat Rashtra Samithi) led by former CM K. Chandrashekar Rao, have strongly opposed the government’s decision. They accused the ruling Congress of “politicizing the project” for electoral gains. However, BJP and Left parties welcomed the probe, stating that the truth behind the massive financial irregularities must come out.
What Next?
The CBI will now begin its investigation, which is expected to include:
- Examination of contracts awarded to major infrastructure companies.
- Technical inspection of Medigadda, Annaram, and Sundilla barrages.
- Verification of financial records and audit trails.
- Statements from officials, contractors, and political leaders involved in project execution.
If proven, this could become one of the biggest corruption scandals in India’s irrigation sector, with long-lasting political and financial implications for Telangana.
