Telangana Sets 6.18 Crore Tree Plantation Target as Vanamahotsavam Progress Reaches 86%

Hyderabad: Telangana has achieved 86% of its tree plantation target under the Vanamahotsavam programme, Panchayat Raj, Rural Development and Women & Child Welfare Minister Dr. Danasari Anasuya Seethakka said on Monday.

The state has set a target of planting 6.18 crore saplings across Telangana. More than 5.32 crore saplings have already been planted, the minister said.

Seethakka reviewed the progress of rural development programmes through a video conference with district-level officials from the Secretariat.

Focus on Tree Plantation and Sapling Survival

The minister asked officials to use the ongoing rains to complete the remaining Vanamahotsavam target.

She also directed field-level teams to inspect the condition of saplings already planted. Officials must check their growth and survival, she said.

The Panchayat Raj and Rural Development departments began the plantation drive ahead of other departments. Preparatory work was also completed during the summer.

Employment Guarantee Scheme workers helped dig pits for plantation activities. The government then began planting saplings soon after the first rains.

Seethakka said the plantation drive continued despite El Niño conditions.

Government Land and Water Bodies to Be Used

Officials were instructed to identify suitable locations for the remaining plantations.

These include areas along streams and roads, lake surroundings, cremation grounds, parks and government lands.

The minister stressed that the current rainy conditions provide a good opportunity to complete the plantation target.

Push for MGNREGA and Water Conservation

Seethakka also asked officials to give special attention to employment guarantee works, water conservation and creation of livelihood assets.

She said rural development programmes should generate lasting benefits for villages and rural households.

Officials were directed to ensure that ongoing works are implemented effectively at the grassroots level.

The review meeting was attended by Commissioner Divya, Special Commissioner Srilakshmi, district CEOs, DRDOs, DPOs and Additional DRDOs.

Telangana Vanamahotsavam 2026

The latest progress highlights Telangana’s continued focus on expanding green cover through large-scale plantation activities.

With more than five crore saplings already planted, officials now have to complete the remaining target while also ensuring that existing plantations survive.

The government is expected to closely monitor plantation sites during the coming weeks, particularly as rainfall provides favourable conditions for sapling growth.
